|Bicycles as Sustainable Transportation: the most efficient mode|
"When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race."
-- H.G. Wells
Bicycles are the most efficient mode of transportation ever invented, about four times more efficient than walking.
However, the bicycle industry is not sustainable in a multi-generational sense. Bicycles depend upon manufacturing facilities on the other side of the world. Ball bearings, chains and other critical components are not generally made in North America, and continued bicycle usage is dependent on a highly globalized production system dependent on vast consumption of fossil fuel to power freight ships and delivery trucks.

Lane County should restore the bicycle parking at its headquarters that was removed when the Wayne Morse plaza was built. Placing a handful of substandard bike racks that are dangerous to bicycle wheels in a back entrance is a poor substitute for real bike parking that is covered in the rain near the main entrance (near the security guards).
Mark bike lanes as “bike lanes” on roads – stencil of words “BIKE LANE” and a picture of a bicycle.
